The Perfect Home Guide: Spring 2009: Going Green for Spring

HERE'S TO AN ECO-FRIENDLY YEAR!

It is a new year and spring is here! Now is the time to incorporate these easy tips to make sure you are conserving both water and energy with your lawn and garden.

START A GARDEN

Growing your own vegetables and plants can be very fun and rewarding for the entire family. Nothing could be better for the planet or your health.

GROW LOCAL

Embrace the native Florida plants. Plants and flowers that are native to the area are going to require less water and maintenance.

DON'T OVER WATER

One of the most common mistakes that you can make is over-watering your lawn. You can buy a very inexpensive lawn moisture meter that will tell you if you are over-watering. Another option to consider would be purchasing an intelligent irrigation control system. This will attune your watering schedule to the weather and your lawn's needs. By not overwtaering, you are conserving water and ensuring a great looking yard.

ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING

Did you know that you can use solar or LED lighting for your lawn, garden and pool? Solar lighting is a terrific energy saver. If you are unable to find solar lights that are bright enough, you can also consider LED lights. LED lights are very bright and use very little power. They last 5-10 times as long as the standard outdoor lights.

USE NON-TOXIC FERTILIZERS

The use of non-toxic fertilizers and pest controls are better for your plants and better for your health. They reduce the amount of harmful toxins that run-off into our waterways.
